Abraham, Isaac, and the Shadow of the Cross
The Campfire Story
Picture a campfire on a cold night. The flames pop and snap. Someone leans forward and begins to speak.
Imagine standing in the cold hush of dawn.
A father walks beside his son. The boy is old enough to carry weight. Old enough to ask questions. Old enough to notice the silence that has wrapped his father like a cloak for three days running.
On Isaac's back rests a bundle of wood. In Abraham's robe, hidden from view, is a knife.
Three days they have walked. Three days with the same impossible command pounding in Abraham's chest:
"Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

No father should ever hear such words. And yet — Abraham walks.
They climb together. Isaac labours under the weight of the wood. And then Isaac asks the question that must have broken something open in his father:
"Father… the fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb?" And Abraham said, "God will provide for Himself the lamb."
— Genesis 22:7–8
Hold that image for a moment. A son. A father. A mountain. Wood carried up toward an altar. The question hanging in the air: where is the lamb?
Now leap forward nearly two thousand years.
Another Father watches another Son walk toward a hill. Another beloved Son. Another promised Son. Another Son carrying wood upon His back. But this time, the wood is a cross. This time, there will be no ram in the thicket. This time, no angel will stay the hand.
Because this Son is the substitute.
"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"
— John 1:29
The parallels are so precise they feel planned. Because they were.
And for centuries, Christians have looked at these two stories and wondered: was it even the same mountain? Did Abraham's feet tread the same ground that Jesus would one day bleed upon?
It is a breathtaking thought.
But before we say something so profound—
we must ask honestly: is it actually true?
What Genesis Actually Says
Here is a detail that matters enormously and is often overlooked. Genesis 22 does not say Abraham went to Mount Moriah.
Read it again carefully:
"...go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
— Genesis 22:2
Not: 'Go to Mount Moriah.'
But: 'Go to the land of Moriah — on one of the mountains.'
That is a region. A broad highland area. Not a single pinpointed summit. The location in Genesis is already more open than most Sunday school tellings suggest.
So How Did Moriah Get Connected to Jerusalem?
The explicit biblical connection between Moriah and Jerusalem comes over five hundred years after Abraham — from one verse in Chronicles:
"Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to David his father, at the place that David had appointed, on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite."
— 2 Chronicles 3:1
This is the first time the Bible explicitly names Mount Moriah as the Temple site in Jerusalem. By the time Chronicles was written, Jewish tradition had firmly understood the Akedah — the binding of Isaac — to be associated with the same sacred mountain region where the Temple would stand.
This is not an accident. The Bible is doing something intentional and beautiful here. It is drawing a thread across centuries:
The mountain where Abraham surrendered his son
↓
becomes the mountain of the Temple sacrificial system
↓
becomes the mountain of God's final provision in Christ.
The mountain of surrender becomes the mountain of sacrifice. God was writing a story across a thousand years of history.
But Was That Golgotha?
This is where the evidence gets thinner — and where honesty matters most.
Golgotha, the place of Jesus' crucifixion, is described in the Gospels as:
"...Jesus suffered outside the gate."
— Hebrews 13:12
"...the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city."
— John 19:20
Archaeological evidence strongly places Golgotha near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — northwest of ancient Jerusalem, outside the city walls in Jesus' day, in a former quarry and burial zone.
The Temple Mount — which Jewish and biblical tradition identifies with Mount Moriah — sits in the eastern and southeastern part of Jerusalem. The two main candidates for Golgotha are both on the north or northwest side of the Old City.
Standard historical and archaeological evidence places them in different parts of the city. Not the same physical hill.
So Is There Any Way They Could Be Connected?
Only in a limited and speculative sense. Because Genesis says 'land of Moriah' and 'one of the mountains,' some have argued that Moriah may refer to a broader ridgeline encompassing parts of ancient Jerusalem — including the northwest area where Golgotha stood.
That is possible. But possible is not provable. No archaeological discovery has demonstrated that Golgotha was part of the Moriah ridge. Scripture itself never makes that exact claim.
What the Evidence Actually Supports:
The Akedah is associated with the land of Moriah ✓
2 Chronicles connects Mount Moriah to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem ✓
Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, elsewhere in Jerusalem ✓
Both events happen within Jerusalem's sacred landscape ✓
Golgotha and the Temple Mount were the exact same hill ✗ sadly not likely

The Stunning Parallels
Here is what we can say with absolute confidence. Whether it was the same exact rock or not — Genesis 22 is one of the clearest previews of the cross in the entire Old Testament. And the parallels are too deliberate to have happened by accident.

Notice something remarkable. Even the timing echoes. Three days after the command, Abraham arrives at the mountain. Three days after the crucifixion, Jesus rose. Hebrews even says Abraham received Isaac back 'figuratively' — as a kind of resurrection, a rehearsal for what was to come.
"By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac… He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back."
— Hebrews 11:17–19
The fingerprints of Providence are all over this story. Long before Calvary was ever a place, God was painting its shape into history.
Does It Even Matter?
(A word to those of us who love a good story — including the person writing this.)
Let's be honest about something.
There is something inside all of us — preachers, teachers, storytellers, devotional writers — that wants the same-mountain connection to be true. Because it is a better story. It is more dramatic. More cinematic. The same soil, the same ridgeline, the father-and-son shadow and the Father-and-Son reality.
We want that detail. And wanting it makes us vulnerable to stating it as fact before we've earned the right to.
A Harder and More Important Question:
What does it say about us when we need the geography to be dramatic... in order for the theology to move us?
Here is the uncomfortable truth: if the cross only takes your breath away when you add the detail that it might have been the same hill as Moriah — something may have gone sideways in how we are telling the story.
Because the real miracle was never the geography.
The real miracle is that thousands of years before Calvary ever happened — before Rome built its crosses, before Pilate was born, before the streets of Jerusalem were even paved — God sat with a man named Abraham, gave him a living prophecy, and pressed into that single story every shape of what redemption would cost Him.
A beloved son.
A father's willingness.
Wood carried up a mountain.
The question: where is the lamb?
And the answer, already on its way.
That is not a story that needs more details to be devastating. It already is.
Sometimes in our search for the next layer — the deeper connection, the more dramatic fact, the detail that will really preach — we walk right past the Person who put it all together. We get so busy tracing the shadow that we forget to look at the Light casting it.
"So Abraham called the name of that place, 'The Lord will provide.' As it is said to this day, 'On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.'"
— Genesis 22:14
Abraham himself named it. Not the mountain of coincidence. Not the mountain of dramatic geography. The mountain of provision. Yahweh-Jireh. The Lord will see to it.
And He did. Two thousand years later, on a hill outside Jerusalem — whatever specific hill it was — He saw to it completely.
What We Can Honestly Claim
For preachers, teachers, and devotional writers: here is how to handle this well.
Safe to Say:
"Genesis 22 places Abraham and Isaac in the land of Moriah. Later Scripture — 2 Chronicles 3:1 — identifies Mount Moriah with the Temple site in Jerusalem. Some Christians have drawn a connection between Moriah and Golgotha, though the evidence does not prove they were the exact same spot. What Scripture does give us is a profound and deliberate prophetic pattern: the beloved son, the father's surrender, the wood, the climb, the question — all of which find their fullness in Christ."
Not Safe to Say as Fact:
"Isaac was offered on Golgotha" or "Mount Moriah and Golgotha are definitely the same place." The current biblical and archaeological evidence does not establish this. It remains a beautiful tradition, not a proven fact.
Honesty about the evidence does not weaken the story. It earns you the right to tell the story with authority.

Section 1: The Story Itself
Read Genesis 22:1–14 aloud slowly.
What details strike you that you have never noticed before? What does the text say — and what does it not say?
Why do you think God asked Abraham to do this?
What was being tested? What was being demonstrated — to Abraham, to Isaac, to us?
When Isaac asks, 'Where is the lamb?' — what do you think Abraham was feeling in that moment?
What does it tell us about Abraham's faith that he answers the way he does?
Section 2: The Geography Question
Did knowing the geographic connection is uncertain change anything for you?
Why or why not? What does your honest answer reveal about how you engage with Scripture?
Why do you think Christians have been drawn to the idea that these events happened on the same mountain?
What need does that connection meet? Is that need a problem, or is it simply human?
Section 3: The Typology
Look at the parallel table in Part Three.
Which parallel strikes you as the most powerful? Which one have you never noticed before?
Hebrews 11:19 says Abraham considered that God could raise Isaac from the dead.
How does this change the way you read Genesis 22? What did Abraham understand that we often miss?
In what sense is Genesis 22 a 'rehearsal' for the crucifixion?
Why might God have given this particular shape to the story — a father, a son, wood, a mountain, a substitute?
Section 4: The Personal Challenge
Have you ever passed on a 'better version' of a biblical story without checking if it was accurate?
What is the danger of doing that — to your own faith, and to those who hear you?
The devotional asks: 'What does it say about us when we need the geography to be dramatic in order for the theology to move us?'
How would you answer that question honestly?
What would it look like to let the actual, proven, documented story of the Akedah take your breath away — without any added details?
Sit with that. Read Genesis 22:1–14 one more time. Slowly.
A Final Word by the Campfire
The fire is low now. The embers are doing their slow work.
Someone says: but doesn't it make the story better if they were on the same hill?
Maybe. But consider what you already have.
You have a God who, before the foundations of the world were laid, knew that the cost of redemption would be His own Son. And rather than leaving us in the dark about it, He gave a man named Abraham a living prophecy — a trembling, real, almost-unbearable preview of what it would one day cost Him.
He staged a rehearsal in the desert.
He let a father raise a knife so we could see it.
He stopped that knife — and then, two thousand years later, did not stop His own.
"He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all — how will He not also, with Him, graciously give us all things?"
— Romans 8:32
The mountain may or may not be the same.
The love is exactly the same.
The cost was real.
The provision was real.
The Lamb was real.
On Abraham's mountain — God stopped the knife.
On Calvary — He did not.
